Get Your Head in The (Weight Loss) Game
When it comes to losing weight, getting healthy and chasing that dream bod you’ve always wanted, so many people seem to think that it starts in your kitchen, or at the gym, but the reality is - it starts in your mind.
While eating the right foods and exercising regularly is key for weight loss, the biggest challenge to overcome, and one that not many people know about, is the ability to CONQUER the mental game.
This “Mental Game” is about using the power of your mind to get you in right state mentally to achieve your fitness goals.
Now if this still sounds confusing, let’s put this into context.
How many times have have you tried to lose weight but convinced yourself you can’t because it wasn’t a success? Or maybe you were successful but within a matter of months, you gained all the weight you worked so hard to lose? If you fall victim to this, ask yourself, did you start with having your head in the game?
If you answered no, don't stress girl, because the truth is not many people know about the importance of the mind game.
Our thoughts and feelings can have such a powerful and influential effect on our health and wellness. But how is this so?
When you think negatively and flog yourself daily at the gym out of fear and hatred of what you see in the mirror, you will continue to attract feeling bad about your body. If you are always critical of your body and always find fault in it, you will never be able to see the change you are dying to see.
How many times have you told yourself, “I’d love my body if I could only be 10kg lighter,” or pushed yourself so hard at the gym because you hate the size of your thighs and just want that renowned “thigh gap?”
This negative attitude is the driving force that stops you from reaching your fitness goals! These are the thoughts that lead us to succumb to our cravings, overexercise and ultimately sabotage our weight loss efforts. So how can you overcome this?
Positive thinking and learning to fking LOVE your body my friend! If you don't love your body from the start, your probably won’t take very good care of it. If you view your body in a negative light, it is easy to fall into the trap of feeling powerless, unmotivated and eventually begin to skip out on your daily dose of exercise because you aren’t seeing those results.
You need to praise and bless every square inch of your body and feed it with positive affirmations like:
“I am healthy and strong, filled with energy and vitality”
“I love working out because it makes me happier and healthier”
“I think healthy thoughts. Every day, in every way, I am getting slimmer”
By doing this you are fueling your body with right tools to get you out of that negative state. Visualise your dream bod, how you want to look and feel, and take time everyday to feel grateful for it. Be confident and believe that your “ideal weight” is already achieved.
Heck, even studies have proven that the more confidence you have in the ability to achieve your goals - the more weight you could lose. So what are you waiting for?
Start by doing little things, and with time, the impact of these small changes will be so strong. Here are 6 ways to cultivate a positive mindset:
- Surround yourself with likeminded people to help you achieve your fitness goals (not just your PT, but friends) The more you talk about it, the better and easier it will be!
- Take Before & After shots. These are awesome tools of motivation to help you stay on track and mentally prepare yourself to continue.
- Celebrate small joys. Don’t just wait for ‘big’ moments like a birthday. Make sure to celebrate the wins, no matter how small. Said no to pizza? Fk yes! You go girl!
- Write your goals and keep them in sight. This will serve as a constant reminder of what you are trying to achieve.
- See yourself through the eyes of a friend. Usually when we view ourselves negatively, we’re often looking through an unrealistic lens. Be your own best friend. What would a friend say?
- Be grateful! Having an attitude for gratitude will improve your overall mood and health almost instantaneously.
Once you get into the habit of loving your body and nourishing it with positive thoughts, your weight loss journey or simply trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle will become so much easier and enjoyable. You will be exercising because you fkn love the way it makes you feel and not because it’s chore or a punishment for eating that donut you were craving last night.
When you learn to love what you see in the mirror, and get on the frequency of positivity, that will be the day you see results. You’d be surprised at the difference a positive mindset makes to your fitness journey, as well as all areas of your life. Just don't forget; bringing your “A Game,” is a “Mind Game.” Good luck!
